09.03.2017 - Crowborough 2 vs Lewes 1
3rd March 2017 An excellent victory by the second team with notable victories by Michael Redman and Jonathan Grisenthwaite against higher rated opponents.Jon Lawrance on top board maintained his excellent performance this season while young Giovanni Currah on his debut for the second team came up against the vagaries of adjudication. After three hours play and all the major pieces still on the board and equal in material the game was unfortunately lost due to the presence of one strong pawn for his opponent and one weak pawn in his own structure.Better luck next time Giovanni and well done to the team.

26.02.2017 - Amardip qualifies for 2017 British Championship
Over the weekend of 18-19 February 2017 Amardip won the West of England Open under 18 Championship thereby qualifying him for a place in the British Championship finals to be played at Llandudno in August. This is a terrific achievement and we wish him the best of luck in the finals where not only will he be competing for the British Under 21 and Under 18 titles at the age of 14 but also the adult British Champion title. This may be a little beyond him this time but he could certainly be a contender for the title in future years....

24.02.2017 - 1st Team vs Haywards Heath
23rd February 2017 - Away
Haywards Heath 1½-3½ Crowborough
Thank you to everyone who played
last night. Unfortunately we lost but it was close.
Amardip Ahluwalia
played Felix (211) and drew a queenless middlegame that could have been
slightly better for him but then I do like those sort of positions so I may
have been wrong. But a good result against the former if not current Sussex
champion.
Robert Elliston played
Jeffrey Boardman (187) and drew but had a slightly better Bishop vs Knight
endgame but draw agreed after 42 moves.
David Fryer played
Martin Faulkner (167) and drew on adjudication after nearly pushing the game a
stage too far. Needed a little trick at the end to hold the endgame on
adjudication.
Jonathan Grisenthwaite
played their captain Graham Ewens (143) and I thought had the better middlegame
but a couple of minor inaccuracies cost him the game in the end.
Tony Pelling played a

11.01.2017 - Uckfield vs Crowborough MSCL Rapidplay
Crowborough Juniors travelled to Uckfield and came away with an excellent hard fought draw against a very strong Uckfield Youth team.Thomas was the first to finish after he played a very dubious pawn move in front of his king his opponent had a rush of blood to the head and went for the throat but unfortunately for him Thomas's counterattack was stronger.Giovanni had a very tough game that was equal out of the opening but slowly got worse. Evie on board 4 had good chances in the middle game but entered a rook ending a couple of pawns down. Giovanni watching was hoping for a draw based on some clever skewers and stalemates. However it was not to be. This left us 2-1 down with Elena's game to watch and she did not disappoint despite a crowd of spectators from both teams. With seconds left on his clock and no way to prevent an imminent checkmate her opponent gracefully resigned and so the match ended all square at 2-2.Well done to all the players from both sides and thank you to Uckfield ...

22.12.2016 - Jonathan Tuck wins Christmas 2016 Lightning
19 Competed
Lightning Tournament Report:
The annual lightning tournament took place on 9th December at the club. Due to the absence of the buzzer the format this year was
5 minutes plus 5 seconds per move instead of the 10 seconds per move.
The
timing gave rise to some excellent games which tested the nerve of everybody
involved. Five rounds were played and at the end of the evening Jonathan Tuck came out on top with a score of 4½ points after 4 wins and a single
draw in round 3.
Trevor Norton came back from not playing in the first round to
finish 2nd overall with 4 points. A short prize giving took place
just before 10 O’clock with the winner and runner up both presented with a box of
chocolates.
A total of 19 players participated in the event but it was
particularly good to see so many juniors taking part that evening. The presence
of a large amount of food and drink probably had something to do with it but
they acquitted themselves very well with...
