1st Team vs Haywards Heath

23rd February 2017 - Away

Haywards Heath 1½-3½ Crowborough

Thank you to everyone who played last night. Unfortunately we lost but it was close.

  1. Amardip Ahluwalia played Felix (211) and drew a queenless middlegame that could have been slightly better for him but then I do like those sort of positions so I may have been wrong. But a good result against the former if not current Sussex champion.
  2.  Robert Elliston played Jeffrey Boardman (187) and drew but had a slightly better Bishop vs Knight endgame but draw agreed after 42 moves.
  3.  David Fryer played Martin Faulkner (167) and drew on adjudication after nearly pushing the game a stage too far. Needed a little trick at the end to hold the endgame on adjudication.
  4.  Jonathan Grisenthwaite played their captain Graham Ewens (143) and I thought had the better middlegame but a couple of minor inaccuracies cost him the game in the end.
  5.  Tony Pelling played a completely mad game against young Lucas Renshaw (134) which I couldn’t understand at all. The final position is adjudicated but we will probably concede as his opponent’s threats of checkmate in the rook and knight vs Rook and Bishop endgame are too strong.

Sorry Gerry we couldn’t find the win we desperately needed but we tried our best over to you now to keep us in Division 1.
