02.11.2016 - Two games from recent matches
The crowborough players annotate their own games with the theme being material in compensation for lack of development. In both games the Crowborough player with the black pieces grabs a pawn (or two) while white has the active pieces. However in both cases black was more familiar with the opening ideas and after a couple of passive moves by white, black in both games is able to swap the pieces off into a winning endgame.Michael's game is particularly instructive on how a weak king can be fatal in a queen and opposite coloured bishop endgame.Enjoy.Games...

14.10.2016 - Club Tournaments 2016-17
Gary McCulloch will be organising the internal competitions for the
coming season.
As a club we will be having 3 competitions this coming
sason.
As in previous years we will be having a long play tournament and a
rapidplay tournament and we will also be having a 10 minute tournament.
This 3rd mini tournament will hopefully encourage members to attend club nights on a
more regular basis. These 10 minute matches will of course be ungraded and
should be a lot of fun and you can play several of these in one night.
Please e-mail to let me know what you
would like to be entered for.
The closing date for entries is 28thOctober 2016.
I will decide on the format of the tournaments once I have the
entries. GARY...

24.07.2016 - ECF Ratings July 2016
The new grades for the English Chess Federation have recently been published.Every 6 months all results of games played in rated events such as the Mid Sussex Chess Lerague and Sussex Junior Chess tournaments are submitted to the database and players are given a performance rating for the last 12 months or last 30 games. There are two grades calculated one for standard play games normally 2+ hours playing sessions and rapidplay games which are normally about 1 hour playing sessions. If player A has a grade 10 higher than Player B then this indicates that if the players had played in the past 12 months then player A would have won 60% of the time and if 20 points difference then 70% of the time and so on. What it does not mean is that if you play a higher graded player now that you will lose. Here is a list of club members who have an ECF grade in the July 2016 list.

18.07.2016 - UK Chess Challenge GigaFinal
16th and 17th July 2016 Please email me with your pictures, games and results. I will update this news item as I receive information so do check back regularly.Well done to everyone who played as qualifying for this South of England GigaFinal is a great achievement putting you all in the top 1000 out of 50,000 entrants. Gary Kendall reports ;
I thought that you might appreciate a couple of shots of the
boys in their Crowborough tops for the web site. Before (limbering up at Cobham
services) and after (ready for the final round).
The boys also wrote down all of their games and have
transcribed some on the computer.
Overall Max got three points and Laurie two. We also saw
Liam, Thomas and Elliot there on Saturday.
Although Laurie was not at the club on Friday as the Kendall's were preparing to travel to Reading for the GigaFinal he must have been there in spirit.
