Lightning Tournament Report:

The annual lightning tournament took place on 9th December at the club. Due to the absence of the buzzer the format this year was 5 minutes plus 5 seconds per move instead of the 10 seconds per move.

The timing gave rise to some excellent games which tested the nerve of everybody involved. Five rounds were played and at the end of the evening Jonathan Tuck came out on top with a score of 4½ points after 4 wins and a single draw in round 3.

Trevor Norton came back from not playing in the first round to finish 2nd overall with 4 points. A short prize giving took place just before 10 O’clock with the winner and runner up both presented with a box of chocolates.

A total of 19 players participated in the event but it was particularly good to see so many juniors taking part that evening. The presence of a large amount of food and drink probably had something to do with it but they acquitted themselves very well with several of them finishing on 3 points.

Their young and agile minds seemed to cope very well with the timing against the slower brains of the older generation. Although Don didn’t manage to pick up any points he did have one of the biggest smiles on his face as he left the building. Maybe that was due to the convivial company and the food and drink consumed.

All in all everybody had a fun evening and looked forward to the next one.
