After winning with the black pieces in the first game of the final Elena Currah held Michael Redman to a draw in the second game thereby picking up the trophy. The game was going well for Michael until Elena spotted a piece sacrifice leading to a perpetual check.Congratulations to Elena and commiserations to Michael who until coming up against an inspired Elena had a perfect 5/5 start in the tournament....

02.06.2016 - Crowborough Juniors' Holiday Chess Pictures

Mark Currah reports from Iceland Giovanni looks a bit happier than he did next to Bobby Fischer's grave. This is in the museum. We were the only visitors that afternoon which probably accounts for the demeanour of the curator sitting in the background! Despite being small and a DIY operation it was fascinating. ...

24.04.2016 - Interesting Game

Here is a game from our last 1st team match against Horsham. It was great to have the players come into the club room and demonstrate their games on the DGT Board and TV Screen. The following is an interesting game from Board 1 that Amardip said he had to stop analysing during the match as it was distracting him from his own game.Gareth commented that there was a bucket full of analysis on this variation of the Pelikan Sicilian and was gambling that Michael was not familiar with it.Michael Forster vs Gareth AnthonyGareth had seen  a commentary on a GM game where a sub variation had been considered better for black in the position of this game after 27....Qg5 but unfortunately the computer thinks differently. In fact multiple Crowborough Congress winner Ian Snape won a game with white against Samuel Williams from this position.PS I cannot take credit for the comments in this analysis as they come from the players or from my database.PPS after an email from Peter I have corrected above...

13.04.2016 - Peter wins Rapid Club Championship

Congratulations go to Peter for fighting through a tough field of the club's strongest players to reach and then win this final. I am sure though that he will be the first to admit that he was fortuitous in his first game to get away with a draw.Final Result - Friday 8th April 2016 Amardip Ahluwalia ½ - ½ Peter Kemp Peter Kemp 1 - 0 Amardip Ahluwalia  With an enthralled crowd watching Amardip force Peter into a worse King and Pawn ending and then winning the resulting pawn race we all assumed the full point was in the bag. Unfortunately Amardip allowed Peter to play his pawn to the seventh and the Q vs RP ending was a draw.I first met this ending over the board when I was 16 so Amardip has gained this experience 4 years sooner. It doesn't matter how many books you study until you actually play the ending and feel the pain it doesn't stick. Just ask Fabiano Caruana who possibly...

16.03.2016 - More adjudication nonsense from the MSCL

The Crowborough 1st Team got into their cars and travelled the 30+ miles to Horsham for the crucial MidSussex Chess League Division 1 clash against Horsham 2.As the table below shows we needed a victory to give ourselves a chance of avoiding relegation.Well 10 players sat down and between them devoted 28 hours to concentrated chess thought and for what.At the end of the playing session the only game to have finished was Amardip's which was a fine win against a strong opponent on board 5. The rest of the games were all only half completed. The MSCL rules say after 42 moves and 3 hours, play must stop and games are adjudicated. This means that after 42 moves of toing and froing and with all respect to the players less than perfect chess played by all, the games are decided on the basis that the rest of the moves will be played at world class if not higher level.Utter nonsense if my game was anything to go by you may as well flip a coin as depending when the game was stopped it would have...
