26.02.2020 - Lewes vs Crowborough Rapidplay

Our youth team achieved a hard fought draw away at Lewes last nght.It took 1½ hours for the first game to finish as all four games went into endgames.Thomas after achieving a half norm and 160+ performance at the weekend went into his game all guns blazing but misplaced a piece in the middlegame and despite multiple pins could not retain his material equality. However the endgame was unclear but efficiently executed by Austin.Raina shortly after equalised the score, nicely converting a strong pin from her bishop into the full point. The other two games were finely poised with non of the players giving any quarter.Ben was next to finish when he neutralised his opponent's edge by liquidating down leaving Henry with an impotent force of King, wrong coloured Bishop and Rook Pawn.So with the score at 1½-1½ all eyes turned to board 3 where Daniel and Jacob were fighting out a Rook, Knight and 3 pawns each endgame. With both their clocks ticking down to below 2 minutes une...

20.02.2020 - Hastings vs Crowborough

1st Team lost at Hastings 4-1 on Tuesday and it could have been a whitewash. In my game we reached the following position. A few moves earlier my opponent had offered a draw and now allows a queen exchange.I was tempted but after 31... Qxb3 32.Nxb3 a4 my two pawns on a4 and e4 are weak and it was not clear to me how I could make any progress. So I played 31... Bb4 which is a terrible blunder. 32.Nc4 the point being that after 32...Qxb5 33.Nd6 Qxc6 (the bishop is pinned and cannot take the Knight ) 34.Nxf7 leads to mate. If I don't capture on b5 my queen is open to attack after attack with moves such as 33.Nf4 and if I try 32...g5 then 33.Nc3 Bxc3 34.Rd6 is one possible line.Fortunately my opponent missed 32.Nc4!! and I went on to take the only point of the match. This leaves us firmly rooted to the bottom of the table with just 3 matches left to avoid relegation to Division 3....

03.02.2020 - Crowborough vs East Grinstead Bookshop the sequel

Friday 31st January 2020 Return fixture saw the Bookshop bring two teams to the Crowborough Community Centre.Report from Jonathan Tuck (Crowborough) Friday was a great advertisement for Junior chess with some of the EGBCC players watching Trevor play through a game on the analysis board with the CCC players at their normal club night and then play the match in complete silence in the other room starting at 7.10. Nick helped set up the refreshments for adults and Kate (Lucy’s mum) dealt with squash for the juniors. 1 Raina Jithendra (122) Toby Appleton (89) 0-1 2 Suriyya Velayudham (115) Cillian Nagy (88) 0-1 3 Lucy Hopkirk (66) Ann Tagg (62) 0-1 4 ...

Trevor would have been proud of the players...

13.12.2019 - MSCL KO Cup Quarter-Final

Crowborough 1st Team go through against Horsham to face Sussex University in the Semi-Final.In a closely contested match Chris was the first to finish taking half a point off his higher rated opponent. With a win and a loss on the top two boards the match was finely poised at 1½-1½ and all focus moved to boards 4 & 5.Ben was playing a same coloured bishop ending and with great technique converted the point. This gave us the match win on tiebreak at which point Jonathan visibly relaxed on board 5 and graciously conceded his losing endgame position without forcing his opponent to play it out.Board Home Horsham Crowborough Away 1 (B) 180A Higgs, Anthony RJ 0 - 1 Fryer, David W 170A 2 (W) 163C Harbott, Peter 1 - 0 Lawrance, Jon AN 155B 3 (B) 145C ...

07.12.2019 - Xmas Yes No Tournament

Prizes galore were won in this exciting tournament created and arbited by Jonathan Tuck.On every move your opponent had the option of saying yes or no to your first move. If No then the move was taken back and another move had to be played.Tactics galore soon appeared on every board and questions as to when the clock was pressed and if a promotion to a queen was No'ed could you then promote to a rook were answered adroitly by the arbiter. The tournament started at 6:30pm and three rounds were played before the adults turned up while a number of juniors left at 7:30pm with mini prizes of tree decorations. The first game between two of our older members went on for ages as they could not seem to understand the concept of checkmate in this chess variant missing numerous opportunities of mate in one. Finally the tournament ended at nearly 10pm and our marvellous no expense spared prizes went to;1st Prize Thomas Martin - 2½ Litres of ready mixed screen wash2nd Prize Daniel Longley - Pac...
