Brighton 1 vs Crowborough 1
23rd October 2014 Gerry had a good game against John Henshaw which was finally agreed a draw after ending for adjudication. Gerry was the exchange up for most of the game but John had a very strong bishop on d6 supported by the e5 pawn effectively making Gerry's un-castled King very
vulnerable (he did castle...on move 32!!). The exchange
was returned and after some heart stopping tactics near time control hostilities were ended and a draw agreed.
David refused an effective draw offer by repetition of moves early on but rightly judging the position better for white carried on playing, unfortunately his level of optimism was not matched by his level of play. After missing a good bishop for knight exchange three times, he then found his bishop trapped on the edge of the board.
Gareth offered Brian an early draw on board 1 which was rejected but soon after, the game ended. Peter was playing new Brighton player Simon Wilks who has moved down from Muswell Hill and is now studying in Sussex. Simon recently won the Weekend Atkins at the British championship. All I know about this game is the result and that they seemed to spend a lot of time in the bar 'analysing' the game.
We thought Don might win his game on default as his opponent failed to turn up but rather unsportingly the non playing Brighton Captain (98 grading points higher than Don) stepped in.
So with a weaker team than we will field in the future we went 3½-1½ down to last years champions.
