Team news has been mixed for the start of 2016.
In the MidSussex League KO Cup we met an inspired Haywards Heath team who came to Crowborough and walked away with a 4-1 victory. I suffered the captain's curse and from a very promising position walked into a mating net while Jon Lawrance did the reverse and turned his worse position into victory during the blitz phase of the game.

In the league the 1st team struggled away at Hastings and it looks like we will be going down 3½ - 1½ once the adjudication schenanigans are completed.
Its a good time to remind players that the league rules do allow a time control of 80 minutes + 10 second increments to be agreed between the players before the start of the game. eg I played Paul Kelly in this Hastings match and agreed to this time control which avoided all the adjudication discussions of a complex ending with one side a pawn ahead. We played it out over 100 moves and finished with a K vs K. Result a draw no discussion or computer analysis needed.
The 3rd Team faired better in a home match against Horsham winning 3½-1½ with a debut win by Jonathan as well as a good victory by young Leo. I will be interested to see his game as Leo converted a rook and minor piece vs queen middlegame into a win.

We have started the qualifier for the UK Chess Challenge with a regular 20 players playing. We are running this tournament over 9 weeks though only 7 games need be played to qualify so its still not too late to start.
As usual collectors badges, gold spots, mascots and shaggy pencils are up for grabs. Leading at the moment with a perfect 2 wins from 2 are; Grace Lamb, Suriya Velayudham and Thomas Martin. The EPSCA Rapidplay Championships were played last Saturday 23rd January 2016 in Liverpool. This is a qualifier for the England Under 11 Team and at the moment I only have the bare facts that both Giovanni Currah and Oliver Manchester scored 5/6 and shared 2nd place while Thomas Manchester achieved his half norm.
Elena played in the Under 9 tournament and scored a very creditable 4/6.
