This re-arranged fixture, for which we had already been penalised 1 Match Point by the league after the first date had to be cancelled at less than two weeks notice due to a range of unavoidable and extenuating circumstances, was a must win match if we were to avoid relegation.

Horsham arrived with a strong team that spanned only 7 grading points. So board 5 with black was always going to be a tough prospect for us and so it turned out with Horsham taking first blood quite early on.

Amardip was the next to finish when Gareth tells me that he saw Amardip play what he thought was a losing move only for his opponent to resign a few moves later. I suspect the truth of the matter is that Amardip is putting on another improvement spurt and will shortly be hitting the 200 rating milestone.

Gareth's game finished shortly afterwards in a draw after a rather quiet opening and then shortly after that Robert shared the spoils after reaching a position with zero play left.

So by 9:30pm it was just yours truly left playing and despite my opponent launching a pre-emptive strike against my king I always felt in control of the position. During the postmortem I received some gentle ribbing from Gareth after I declared my position was good due to my strong knight on g1.

So the match ended in a typical home victory with wins with the white pieces and a couple of draws with the black ones.

This leaves the league table tantalisingly poised for the final games on Thursday when no matter what the result on Monday between Worthing 2 and Horsham 2 we will stay up if we beat Brighton 1 away. The only problem is that if Brighton win they will be crowned champions so I expect they might be trying quite hard.
