On a filthy night with wind and rain causing chaos not only on the roads but amidst power cuts and squealing Bank alarms the Crowborough team travelled to East Grinstead. The first game to finish was on board 4 and was probably the best played opening of the night. Trevor would have been proud of the players...
|13.12.2019 - MSCL KO Cup Quarter-Final
Crowborough 1st Team go through against Horsham to face Sussex University in the Semi-Final.In a closely contested match Chris was the first to finish taking half a point off his higher rated opponent. With a win and a loss on the top two boards the match was finely poised at 1½-1½ and all focus moved to boards 4 & 5.Ben was playing a same coloured bishop ending and with great technique converted the point. This gave us the match win on tiebreak at which point Jonathan visibly relaxed on board 5 and graciously conceded his losing endgame position without forcing his opponent to play it out.Board

|07.12.2019 - Xmas Yes No Tournament
Prizes galore were won in this exciting tournament created and arbited by Jonathan Tuck.On every move your opponent had the option of saying yes or no to your first move. If No then the move was taken back and another move had to be played.Tactics galore soon appeared on every board and questions as to when the clock was pressed and if a promotion to a queen was No'ed could you then promote to a rook were answered adroitly by the arbiter. The tournament started at 6:30pm and three rounds were played before the adults turned up while a number of juniors left at 7:30pm with mini prizes of tree decorations. The first game between two of our older members went on for ages as they could not seem to understand the concept of checkmate in this chess variant missing numerous opportunities of mate in one. Finally the tournament ended at nearly 10pm and our marvellous no expense spared prizes went to;1st Prize Thomas Martin - 2½ Litres of ready mixed screen wash2nd Prize Daniel Longley - Pac...

He achieved the winning position with a forced mate in 6 on the board only to blow it by moving his knight, as described later by an insensitive soul, to some random square.Halloween Junior BlitzEarlier in the evening the juniors played their own tournament with a strong field of 10 players.Henry Shaw won on tiebreak from Benedict Weis.Trevor acted as filler for the first 3 rounds until Suriya arrived for the final two rounds.CrosstableJunior Club ChampionshipOver the past 8 weeks 25 juniors...

|16.07.2019 - Weald Congress
Twelve club members played at the annual Weald Congress an adult tournament but organised by Sussex Junior Chess so an excellent opportunity for our juniors to gain long play tournament experience.Congratulations to everyone playing but especially to Oliver Stockham who scored 4½/5 winning the Minor Section and £110 and to Peter Crosby who came 3rd in the same section.Special mention to Martin who picked up a grading prize in the very strong Open section with a marvellous 203 performance. From experience I know how difficult it is to concentrate on your own game while also keeping an eye on your children's games.
